http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1102290 Bug ID: 1102290 Summary: unable to install opensuse no screen readers are enabled or launchable Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.3 Hardware: All OS: Linux Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation Assignee: yast2-maintainers@suse.de Reporter: mhussaincov93@googlemail.com QA Contact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- I am blind and require a screen reader in auder to navigate my machine. I am unable to install opensuse because accessibility tools are a, not installed, or b, they are not activatable. I tryed launching gnome-orca from the gnome live opensuse image it did not launch i'm not sure if it even launched. I would be greatfull if gnome-orca is runnable duering the live run of the system so I would be able to install and use opensuse. the only accessibility I found was on the boot menu it did speek so i could arrow down to the install button. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Steffen, could you PLS point us to some (Linuxrc?) documentations that describes what we currently have for visually-impaired people?
What we currently have is what Majid described: the boot loader reads the menu entries (enabled with F9). Then we have - nothing. There is in fact the detection of Braille readers still in place. But that's untested for years.
I believe the approach we had in the past (Braille reader + yast in text mode) is probably no longer the best way to go. Having something like gnome-orca + sound in the installation system (as the live installer is an unloved child) looks more suitable today.
And what we'd also need are some really patient testers giving us feedback. :-)
The braille + text installation is still good and lot of (especially advanced) people use it as their primary interface. The problem is nobody test it. Also a lot of (even blind) people don't have braille display because not everyone (nor even some blind people) manages to read it (fast enough) plus it's very expensive.
As Majid said, there are packages missing on the live CD and also during the installation it's not working either. Those packages are at least installed by default so if sighted person performs the installation then it works just fine.
Can somebody point me to any documentation about installing Suse with a braille display? I would like to try it. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I am personally willing to test anything in this regard. Having an independent way of installing Open Suse is really important for me. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

hey, would it be possable to reinstall the packages to the iso? untill this is somehow sorted out are there any alternatives to getting opensuse installed? if yast had a interface where it was pure text not ncurses orca has trouble with it, like debian's installer on there net install iso would also work, e.g press 1 for default partition skeem, 2 manual partitioning, would it be possable for me to gennerate an iso with these packages orca and espeak or something? the more accessible a distribution is, the better for said distribution because you will get more users, and the more users the more the word would spread. I really want to try and use opensuse! shame i can't just unsquashfs the filesystem over the exsisting partitions,
If you are really desperate like I was you can install Open Suse over ssh,. The yast2 even in the text interface isn't very accessible and often you have to check the color of the text with Speakup to figure out what is selected, but it is definitelly doable. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
