It turns out that it happens only when the program does not produce any output on stdout but does output on stderr. New text: "External program %s returned invalid data. (No other error means no data at all)" Fixed in SVN for yast2-core-2.17.6. Now it dawns on me, its stderr should go to the log. We do that for target.bash already.
