So, the empty $LANGUAGE variable can cause problems on some apps like man. Maybe $LANGUAGE overrides the setup of $LANG. There was a report that yakuake suffers from the same problem. Can $LANGUAGE be just unset if not set in KDE? The nroff shell script prefers $LANGUAGE but doesn't check whether it's empty or not.
