[Bug 230432] New: Mesa causes segfault when idl is about to open X window
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=230432 Summary: Mesa causes segfault when idl is about to open X window Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: pvh@oma.be QAContact: sndirsch@novell.com IDL crashes on a segmentation fault when it is about to open an X window on the console in order to render its first plot. I could determine that the fault lies with Mesa by replacing the standard Mesa-6.5.1 libraries shipped with OpenSUSE 10.2 final with the 6.5.2 libraries found here: ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/repositories/xorg73/openSUSE_10.2/x86_64 Once the libraries were replaced, IDL could successfully open an X window and appeared to behave normally. The same IDL installation also behaved normally under openSUSE 10.1. Using the Mesa libraries mentioned above is however not a long term solution since they produce other buggy behavior. Also the 32-bit libraries are missing in that repository. So I am still stuck with this problem. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=230432 pvh@oma.be changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEEDINFO |NEW Info Provider|pvh@oma.be | ------- Comment #5 from pvh@oma.be 2006-12-22 05:15 MST ------- I replaced Mesa-6.5.1-23 and MesaGLw-6.5.1-21 with their 6.5.2 counterparts and left the rest of the installation untouched. Then I started ppracer just to see if 3D acceleration was working. The font rendering was really bad (text was unreadable) and during the initial setup of the game there was what appeared to be an extra small window positioned over the four corner edges of the main window. Maybe I had to replace the whole X distribution as well? Since this was only a quick test I did not want to do that. IDL is a commercial data visualization program http://www.ittvis.com/idl/ There is an open replacement being developed called GDL that aims to be compatible with IDL. http://sourceforge.net/projects/gnudatalanguage GDL is certainly a very useful program, but if you are a long-term user of IDL, you will find that there still are a few annoying inconsistencies and discrepancies in behavior between IDL and GDL. In the long run I would hope to move from IDL to GDL though. GDL might be an interesting package to add to openSUSE by the way. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Unfortunately I cannot help here, since the DRI driver is developped by Intel/Tungsten Graphics. Honestly I must say that most professional OpenGL users rely on graphics chipsets of other vendors. Looks like this is not only related to performance reasons, but also to driver correctness. :-( This issue might get fixed in a future Mesa release. Setting up the gfx driver was a bit of a disaster though. sax2 did not work at all, so I had to copy the old xorg.conf from the 10.2 installation (which obviously was set up for i810). That seemed to work, but 3D acceleration was disabled. I then decided to switch to the new intel driver. I hand-edited the xorg.conf file to change i810 -> intel and then configured the driver from YaST2 administrator settings. After some switching back and forth and rerunning the configuration I could eventually get it in the correct resolution, but still no 3D acceleration! Some googling suggests that I am not the only one with this particular problem, so I will assume that the driver is to blame. As long as this problem is not fixed I obviously cannot say anything about the problem reported above. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

So in the end I decided to simply copy the xorg.conf file from the openSUSE 10.2 setup and reboot. This file still had the Load "dri" statement included. X did start up after the reboot, but 3D acceleration still does not work. The only difference I see is that with the intel driver, the game ppracer would just give me a black screen and hang, but with the i810 driver it would play (only very very slowly...).
