There is no way to find out what was freezing your system. It may also be hardware related even if it does not happen with other os (different system usage). There are plenty of examples on the net. I can add the following info: the hard freeze happens only in X, and has nothing to do with overheating. Just to let the computer idling around freezes it within 5 minutes to 2 hours. A strange but confirmed workaround is to plug in any USB device. In my case, a simple memory stick suffice to let the machine go without any freeze. Some combinations of kernels and i810 drivers seem to work on other distributions like gutsy and opensuse 9. I added the relevant xorg.0.log. Does this also happen with 11.1, maybe you still have a small partition for a test system or you could at least additionally install the latest kernel from here: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/kernel/kotd/HEAD/i586 You need to install both, the -default-base and -default kernels. First will print you some errors at mkinitrd stage which are harmless. Best install them with: rpm -ivh kernel-default{,-base}.rpm Then you have the kernel additionally installed and you can still boot the 11.0 one. If this one works we will know that it's an already fixed kernel issue which would help a lot... Both above scenarios may already help a lot people to be able to work with their system again. Please also attach lspci -vv -nn and cat /proc/interrupts and a dmesg (after a fresh boot). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

See e.g. this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-782904.html It summarises what I know: - the freeze happens only with X running, even without compiz (plain kde3 session). - Any USB device prevents the freeze, even a simple memory stick. - I don't know whether it is only X killing the input devices, as the computer is not in a network (no ssh-ing). I can't switch terminals or kill X, no input is accepted. I don't have a null modem, sorry. - Yes it is a C400. - I will try acpi=off, will see. - opensuse 11.1 does not contain the i810 driver anymore (at least on the live CD), that is why I chose 11.0. This beast cannot read DVD's (yes, it IS old, but all my gf has) - in the thread mentioned above it is said that ubuntu 8.10 solves this problem, so it might be fixed in X/kernel/whatever already - the EnablePipeA option does not fix the issue, but is supposed to fix the suspend-to-ram problem - I will try the new kernel, please give me a day for that And thanks again for your help, I am a happy suser since 8.1, so it is quite embarassing for me that my gf as a newtimer runs into those problems, and I can't fix it ;-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

A small annoyance occured though: when shutting down the machine reaches runlevel 0, but without acpid running the final power down does not happen And I am now sure that it is a total freeze: with a memory stick plugged in I watched /var/log/messages, /var/log/warn, and /var/log/Xorg.0.log tail -f-ing. I removed the memory stick, waiting for the freeze, that finally happened. No message in the three logs though. Trying to plug in the stick again did nothing. Even the small LED on the stick, that usually lightens up in that case, stayed off. No notification on the screen either.
