[Bug 445602] New: Yast Installer Boot Loader Fails to Create Proper Entry for Existing RAID Array
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=445602 Summary: Yast Installer Boot Loader Fails to Create Proper Entry for Existing RAID Array Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Factory Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: drankinatty@suddenlinkmail.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- On install of 11.1 Beta 5, the installer did not handle the boot cofiguration for an existing RAID-1 openSuSE 11.0 install on the same machine rendering the previous 11.0 install unbootable. In other words, the 11.1 Beta 5 install broke the grub configuration leaving the existing operating system dead and the display reading the dreaded Grub 17 Error. On this installation, and just about every installation since 11.0, the boot loader configuration has left the other installed sysems unbootable by creating an improper menu.lst file for the new installation. Here the installer created the menu.lst for the 11.1 install with the follow entry to supposedly boot the existing 11.0 install: ###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: openSUSE 11.0 - 2.6.25.18-0.2 (/dev/mapper/nvidia_fdaacfde_part5)### title openSUSE 11.0 - 2.6.25.18-0.2 (/dev/mapper/nvidia_fdaacfde_part5) root (hd0,0) configfile /boot/grub/menu.lst Despite the fact that /dev/mapper/nvidia_fdaacfde_part5 doesn't even exist at this stage of the boot process, the installer completely botched the root (hd0,0) statement. The entry in the 11.0 grub/menu.lst needed to boot that install is: ###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: linux### title openSUSE 11.0 - 2.6.25.18-0.2 root (hd0,4) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.25.18-0.2-default root=/dev/mapper/nvidia_fdaacfde_part7 resume=/dev/mapper/nvidia_fdaacfde_part6 splash=silent vga=0x31a showopts initrd /initrd-2.6.25.18-0.2-default Now if the root (hd0,0) (hd0,4) issue wasn't enough, when I went into Yast to correct the problem in 11.1 yast proposed to boot with title openSUSE 11.0 - 2.6.25.18-0.2 (/dev/dm-02) and root (hd0,0) which again didn't have a snowballs chance booting the machine. This is alarming to say the least. Yast, knowing about the other system and havine the old menu.lst at its disposal, couldn't even cut-n-paste the correct bood configuration in the menu.lst file. This should be fixed. I was lucky in having the knowledge to mount the 11.0 partitions and simply copy the correct boot requirments over to the 11.1 grub instll and get my 11.0 to boot, but I would wager that there are a loarge precentage of people out their that would just get hammered by this. Since I stall have both OS's spinning inside the box, let me know if I can do any additional testing or provide additiional information. This one is likewise a biggie. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Thanks for report, I found root of problems - 2008-12-20 00:01:52 <3> linux(3841) [Bootloader_API] modules/Bootloader_API.pm(Bootloader_API::DumpLog):28 WARNING: GRUB::UnixDev2GrubDev: Unknown device '/dev/disk/by-id/raid-nvidia_fdaacfde-part5', fall back to (hd0)
This mean that one function doesn't translate that udev link. I must search it when I come to work (after christmas hollydays) direct in code.
Excellent! Thank you Josef! I'm glad this will get fixed. I can work around it quite easily, but boot loader problem absolutely freak the majority of people out and scare them off from a distro. We want to keep them all ;-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
