In other cases it compiles but VMs are not started successfully. Some workarounds were discussed in VMTN at https://communities.vmware.com/thread/565146 but they do not help in all cases (e.g. not in my case). Possible reasons discussed are backported code parts from kernel 4.10 and changes in the interface of get_user_pages().
