[Bug 287017] New: Asus MB NIC not working during install
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=287017 Summary: Asus MB NIC not working during install Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 5 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: Greg.Freemyer@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Beta-Customer I have been unable to get my new Asus Striker Extreme's built in dual NICs to work under OpenSUSE 10.2, so I just installed 10.3 Alpha5 to see if it would work there. With Alpha5, my only efforts were during the install process when you can try to test your NIC setup. No luck. Per my spec sheet, it is a: NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI built-in dual Gigabit MAC with external Marvell PHY Support NVIDIA DualNet technology OpenSUSE is reporting it as a "ASUSTeK MCP55 Ethernet". As I said above, I'm getting the same basic error with the latest 10.2 kernel as well. For now I have installed a 3com PCI based card and it is working fine. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I don't think I tried a static IP. So using the same cat5 cable if I plug into the PCI-bus 3com card I installed and do rcnetwork restart I have full network access. If I move the cable to either of the built in NICs and do rcnetwork restart, I get nothing. (My 1 Gbit switch is showing a 1 Gbit connection, but I don't have any IP connectivity.) ifconfig -a below from having the cat5 cable in one of the MB NICs and doing a rcnetwork restart. eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:DA:21:92:3C UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:11480 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:90 frame:0 TX packets:5450 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:6 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:4136574 (3.9 Mb) TX bytes:1741109 (1.6 Mb) Interrupt:16 eth0 is the 3com, and I assume the above traffic was for the 3Com card prior to moving the cat5 cable. eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1A:92:81:20:0D inet6 addr: fe80::21a:92ff:fe81:200d/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:22 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:10386 (10.1 Kb) Interrupt:22 Base address:0xc00 eth2 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1A:92:81:2A:4A UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b) Interrupt:21 Base address:0xe000 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:342 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:342 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:24604 (24.0 Kb) TX bytes:24604 (24.0 Kb) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

No luck, but strangely I got lots of "Destination Host Unreachable" errors as opposed to simple timeouts. netstat -r looked right to me Also I tried to ping 10.0.1.167 from another SUSE box. Same error messages. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I tested both eth1 and eth2 (One at a time. I only have one subnet to work with.) Is there grub menu change I can make to make that permanent? Or is there a better way? Oh, and any more info you need to update the kernel to handle this automatically? I tried the new test module. It still requires msi=0 to work. Obviously I'm operational at this point, but if you want to continue troubleshooting I can. Specifically this is a lab machine, so as long as no other tests are running it is not a big issue. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=287017#c14 Karsten Keil <kkeil@novell.com> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |RESOLVED Resolution| |WORKSFORME --- Comment #14 from Karsten Keil <kkeil@novell.com> 2007-11-06 05:13:33 MST --- Maybe the MSI problem is not only in the driver, it may be also be in central kernel parts or in your BIOS (try updating and maybe run the BIOS check from the boot CD/DVD). You can also try some of our daily kernel builds from time to time to see if this issue is fixed in newer mainline version (2.6.24 versions will be there soon): ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/kernel/kotd/HEAD/ I close it for now as work for me, since the msi=0 workaround fix it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
