[Bug 466674] New: knetworkmanager doesn't assign an ipv4 address to wlan0
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=466674 Summary: knetworkmanager doesn't assign an ipv4 address to wlan0 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE3 AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: contact@philipashmore.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-GB; rv:1.9.0.5) Gecko/2008121300 SUSE/3.0.5-1.1 Firefox/3.0.5 I recently purchased a TrendNet 54Mbps Wireless G Broadband router. I've got a Compaq Presario A900 with a wireless adapter: (Vista says) Atheros AR5007 802.11b/g WiFi Adapter (KDE3/kinfocenter/PCI says) Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01) I'm running OpenSuse 11.1 x86_64. I got past the basic hurdles and now the Atheros card is talking to the wireless router... except that it's not being assigned an IPv4 address. Sometimes it doesn't even have an IPv6 address!?! The file "/usr/share/dbus-1/system-services/fi.epitest.hostap.WPASupplicant.service" contains [D-BUS Service] Name=fi.epitest.hostap.WPASupplicant Exec=/usr/sbin/wpa_supplicant -Dwext -iwlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf -u -dddt -f /var/log/wpa_supplicant.log User=root An excerpt of "/var/log/wpa_supplicant.log" shows 1232077689.140913: Scan requested (ret=0) - scan timeout 30 seconds 1232077690.117982: RTM_NEWLINK: operstate=1 ifi_flags=0x1003 ([UP]) 1232077690.118062: RTM_NEWLINK, IFLA_IFNAME: Interface 'wlan0' added 1232077690.118087: Wireless event: cmd=0x8b19 len=16 1232077690.118158: Received 724 bytes of scan results (2 BSSes) 1232077690.118192: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS 1232077690.118283: Selecting BSS from priority group 5 1232077690.118310: Try to find WPA-enabled AP 1232077690.118330: 0: 00:14:d1:57:20:2d ssid='Bathseda' wpa_ie_len=22 rsn_ie_len=0 caps=0x11 1232077690.118357: selected based on WPA IE 1232077690.118377: selected WPA AP 00:14:d1:57:20:2d ssid='Bathseda' 1232077690.118399: Try to find non-WPA AP 1232077690.118418: Already associated with the selected AP. ..so they are talking using WPA... except that I can't use it to surf the internet etc. Using the wired network connection I can manage the router. I shows that both the wired and wireless connections exist: Dynamic DHCP List - different MAC addresses. My machine dual boots Vista and OpenSuse - wireless networking works fine in Vista. I also noticed that only the ath5k driver got this far, trying to disable it prevented me from seeing any wireless routers. Reproducible: Always Actual Results: No working wireless internet Expected Results: Non working wireless internet Kernel 2.6.27.7-9-default -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I've trimmed /var/log/wpa_supplicant.log of (most) sensitive information - is there a script for this?
No :)
I wasn't able to reproduce the IPv6 only occurrence, but some comments: 1. /var/log/wpa_supplicant.log contains sensitive data - shouldn't these be somehow masked out? Maybe it's because I asked it to be so verbose.
Not sure what you mean. Keys should not appear in the log. Everything else is a bug.
2. Why not have proper date-time stamps in /var/log/wpa_supplicant.log like /var/log/NetworkManager?
You might request a feature using open fate for that?
3. KNetworkManager allows you to configure wireless devices but it doesn't seem to remember that you've specified specifics for WPA version and cyphers. It displays the specifics (greyed out) but doesn't show that overrides are enabled.
Not sure.
I'm sitting quite close to the router (that situation will change) so I've turned it's power output down to half.
When attempting an rsync connection to ftp.heanet.ie, it succeeds every other time! Go figure.
Otherwise (fingers crossed) it's working.
Does that mean this bug is not valid anymore?
I hope the logs help pin any problems down.
The NetworkManager log does not show a successful wireless connection attempt. Hence the attached part of the log does not represent the bug here. Could you please try again to reproduce this issue and attach both logs after the bug happened to you?
