[Bug 250624] New: APM should be built as a module
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=250624 Summary: APM should be built as a module Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 1plus Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: seife@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de CC: hmacht@novell.com, aj@novell.com, behlert@novell.com, trenn@novell.com, fseidel@novell.com OtherBugsDependingO 245732 nThis: We should finally stop supporting APM. The first step is to no longer build APM into the kernel, but build it as a module. This should be done now, so that we can get this tested early enough for CODE 11. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

APM seems to be still used for powering down old machines. APM does not create too big support load for me... so I see no urgent reason to disable it just now. I do not know. It is true that we should not claim it is supported. It is there, but I do not think we'd fix it if it was broken. If apm being a module tells people "hey, this is not supported", then perhaps it should be done. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

But apm stuff is quite separate..., it's not worth it? Does any userspace tool (hal?) already try to load it? Give me a yes or a "package is in commit queue" and I do the change... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=250624 ------- Comment #6 from seife@novell.com 2007-03-19 12:06 MST ------- When do we need to load apm? if acpi fails? We could do that in the HAL start script. We can, however, still change that once the kernel has gone modular wrt. apm. I'd actually like to try if it breaks anything. The idea behind this is, to more or less get rid of APM, (still ship the module, but not load it unless the admin explicitly enables it) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=250624 ------- Comment #7 from trenn@novell.com 2007-03-19 12:36 MST ------- I'd try to load it if there is no acpi without the need that the user has to do anything. It's anoying if you need to fiddle with different settings to get your machine functioning correctly. I suggest to set the module to "unsupported" for SLE11 and not load it explicitly anymore there (this is what you want, to get rid of the Enterprise support for this, right?). Nobody pays more money for the OS than the machine, so there is no need for support on SLE11. But a lot linux users don't want to throw away their old machines and are happy if things work out of the box. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I'd just do tainted |= taint_unsupported into apm.c :-). I believe that apm should be loaded whenever acpi is not used. It is needed for cpu power saving, so it should be loaded during boot. Thomas, can you take care of this? I do not really care / know the support etc issues. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
