[Bug 1007746] New: Selecting Kernel 4.8.4 fails to boot during loading ramdisk, causes reboot
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1007746 Bug ID: 1007746 Summary: Selecting Kernel 4.8.4 fails to boot during loading ramdisk, causes reboot Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: i686 OS: SUSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Bootloader Assignee: jsrain@suse.com Reporter: i22a@yahoo.co.uk QA Contact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- When selecting kernel 4.8.4 it gets to "loading initial ramdisk" (If I remember correctly) and then reboots. Maybe it does not have enough room? although this system has 1.2G RAM. The previous kernel 4.7.6 boots OK. initrd -> initrd-4.8.4-1-default vmlinuz -> vmlinuz-4.8.4-1-default openSUSE Tumbleweed 20161026 I don't think there will be any logs. The system is a Dell Inspiron 510m laptop with extra RAM. cat /proc/cpuinfo processor : 0 vendor_id : GenuineIntel cpu family : 6 model : 13 model name : Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.50GHz stepping : 8 microcode : 0x20 cpu MHz : 800.000 cache size : 2048 KB physical id : 0 siblings : 1 core id : 0 cpu cores : 1 apicid : 0 initial apicid : 0 fdiv_bug : no f00f_bug : no coma_bug : no fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 2 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 sep mtrr pge mca cmov clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss tm pbe bts eagerfpu est tm2 bugs : bogomips : 1593.57 clflush size : 64 cache_alignment : 64 address sizes : 32 bits physical, 32 bits virtual power management: -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

If you are running on UEFI, adding the parameters to /etc/default/grub GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="debug ignore_loglevel earlyprintk=efi" Or traditional bios: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="debug ignore_loglevel earlyprintk=vga, keep After the modification is done, run this command to update the boot loader config file, /boot/grub2/grub.cfg. update-bootloader --refresh Reboot and Test. Thanks. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1007746 http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1007746#c3 --- Comment #3 from Ian Jones <i22a@yahoo.co.uk> --- It is a traditional bios. I added the commands so it looks like this: echo 'Loading Linux 4.8.4-1-default ...' linux /boot/vmlinuz-4.8.4-1-default root=UUID=b3c20bd7-eba1-4521-a62e-37fd44f86e75 debug ignore_loglevel earlyprintk=vga, keep echo 'Loading initial ramdisk ...' initrd /boot/initrd-4.8.4-1-default And ran update-bootloader --refresh But there does not appear to be any log. If I run: journalctl |grep -i "linux version" I only see 4.7.6 like this: Nov 01 10:42:55 carpet kernel: Linux version 4.7.6-1-default (geeko@buildhost) (gcc version 6.2.1 20160830 [gcc-6-branch revision 239856] (SUSE Linux) ) #1 SMP Fri Sep 30 12:22:14 UTC 2016 (fb37fcc) If I run "journalctl -b -1" I do not see any log for the failed boot, I only see the previous boot of 4.7.6. I have tried booting with a grub2 rescue disk too, but also it reboots. The reboot occurs after the message 'Loading initial ramdisk ...'. I should perhaps try a different kernel, or noinitrd? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
