For reference, I started the system at 4:30 local time, just before I went to work. So, it booted with minor hitches - still hung up for a bit on pata_atiixp, but it got past it in about 10 minutes, as opposed to the almost 60 it took before. When I got into the installation system, I clicked through to the partitioner. Something odd - it didn't detect my first IDE disk (would be sda). It detected the second one just fine, and had no problems with the thumbdrive. I twiddled with the partitions, etc., but didn't commit anything. If it were the second one (the older of the two) it didn't detect, I'd have understood, but the first one is only two months old - and it's housing and running the windows OS I'm using to type this message, so I imagine it's not bad. Go figure. Anyway, new copies of dmesg and boot.msg attached. Did it really take 10 mins? There are only four timeouts, which should add up to somewhat over two minutes. Anyways, the problem is that your second harddrive is timing DMA commands. After several timeouts, libata backs down to PIO4 and things start to work. Strange. Could be a cabling problem. Can you please try to rewire the stuff? You are using 80c cable, right? It just sat on its thumb when I connected the older drive as the master, and booted with no problems when I disconnected it. I totally forgot to twiddle with the cables back when you said "rewire it" the first time. Okay, so we've isolated the IDE slave as the problem here (Maxtor 200GB, revision 3.AAD) - makes me wonder if this is a problem with the drive series, or just my drive. Thing is, it detects and runs with no problems under windows - no data corruption, no slowness in access - it runs most of my games and applications, from '90s DOS games to stuff like Oblivion. >_> One thing I did notice is that the BIOS pauses when it's dealing with the drive, and Windows takes about 20 seconds between the system info display and showing the XP splash screen. I kind of took it for granted before, since my systems have pretty much -always- had some sort of idiosyncracy, but in retrospect, it definately seems like an issue with the drive. I guess technically the bug is closed, since we've established it as a hardware issue, but do you have any suggestions on how to get it so it... well, doesn't hang up like this? Something definitely is off with the drive. * You can use libata.force=9.1:pio4 to force pio4 only on the affected device and you can always use it. * Windows is probably working around the problem too. Can you please go to device manager in windows, open the properties for the IDE channel and check which transfer mode Windows is using for the device in the advanced settings tab? * The problem with installation is that it times out before libata falls back to the working configuration. This is in part because IO command timeout is set to a too high value in the sd driver. We need to work on that.
