Unfortunately I can't check that theory out with a different disk, from around
2003, I only have those 2 Seagates the "in drive" at the time. An older 10GB
Barracuda ST310220A works same as the Maxtor.

The Asus A7V mobo had an onboard PDC20265, like the BP6 had the HPT366 PATA IDE
controller.
That thread suggests at the time at least someone ran into DMA issue; so
perhaps there's a clue if some IDE/ATA driver changes were made for newer
disks in/around 2001?
