--- Comment #13 from David Rankin
Sorry, we don't support the ATI proprietary driver - we just make it available. It looks as though it just isn't synced up with 11.1
Thanks Jeff, Yes, we are familiar with the ATI driver binary and how Novell just gets the package for AMD/ATI, see: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=338930 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=338947 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=340459 Stefan Dirsch has done a great job helping to make the driver work for openSuSE and in resolving problems with the packaging with ATI in the past. I don' know whether the contact is still active, but ATI used to be in the loop on some issues through the contact atilinuxnovellbugs@ati.com. The present problem is not only that the driver isn't sync'ed with 11.1, the problem is that the driver no longer builds on anything later that 10.3. Stefan has identified the precise problem (see comment #8, this bug) so the issue seems to be coordinating with ATI to have the needed information put back in/added to the binary package. After that is accomplished, then performance degradation in the 8-10 and 8-11 drivers compared to the 8-9 need to be addressed. I don't know whether that will be an ATI issue with the driver or a Novell issue with glx/aiglx, but performance of the 8-10 driver and 8-11 driver (built on 10.3) has dropped to 50% of what it was with the 8-9 driver using a simple glxgears comparison. The decrease is very apparent in real-world use such as video and with compiz. It was my understanding from the past (may not apply now) that ATI only addressed approximately 5 Linux driver issues at a time. With the release of 11.1 slated for 16 days from now, the build issue on 11.1 should be elevated to one of those that gets fixed to avoid the backlash from all the people stuck with ATI cards when 11.1 debuts. Thanks for looking into this issue. It would be nice to be able to install the driver again. Thankfully, ATI makes the past releases of the driver available... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
