I have just reviewed the code in /usr/bin/gnome and it looks very ugly:
If you login first time to >= 10.3 and say beagle is not yet installed, it will
be never added. Additionally, no branding and customizations are possible here.
Here is a possible idea to fix it:
Scripts in /etc/gnome-session-init.d/*.sh
If script returns 0, it will be started never more. If script returns 1, it
will be started next time again.
.. And something, which would allow to update desktop file after distro
upgrade or packages removal.
These scripts may be a part of particular packages or directly of
gnome-session.
Somewhere in home directory there will be a list of succeeded scripts.
Later, it may be replaced by the global desktop project mentored by Federico.
