--- Comment #46 from Mike Fabian 2007-11-14 11:15:49 MST ---
Note the comment I wrote in the 'case "$TERM" in' section:
case "$TERM" in
rxvt*|vt*|xterm*|linux|screen*)
# fix locale settings if they are not suitable for the
# terminal setting (UTF-8 or not)
# But should we really do this here? Isn't it user error
# if the locale settings are not suitable for the terminal
# used?
[...]
I’m really not sure whether this code is useful at all and why it was
added. If the locale settings are not suitable for the terminal used,
I guess it is an error of the user who must have done something silly.
We cannot fix every possible user setup error in the yast start
script.
The only think I can imagine why this code still might be useful is
when using "ssh" between systems where "ssh" still doesn’t transmit
the locale environment. In that case, the locale environment on the
remote system might not be correct for the local terminal. Of course
that is also user error, but that is a very common error and it might
be useful to try fixing this in YaST. Therefore, the above code may
still be useful in some corner cases. So I didn’t remove it but just
tried to fix it to make it work as intended.
