I had a smilar problem.
It's also affected the first partition on the first HD within the system, but
in this case it was a Windows XP system.
After installing Grub this partition was not bootable. The partition seemed to
be 100% full. An analyzing tool reports an invalid blocksize of this partition.
The 11.1 system (/dev/sda7 in this case) boots up without problems.
After restoring the Windows system (on /dev/sda1) and calling a grub-install on
the 11.1 system, the same error occurs.
Seems that grub writes some data to an address where it should not write to.
Mainboard was an ASUS P5B Deluxe WiFi (Intel P965 +ICH8R) with an Intel Core 2
Duo 6600.
