https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=274321 Summary: Formats wrong partition. Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: kristian.askildsen@chello.no QAContact: jsrain@novell.com (I'm not used to file bug reports, but this bug ended up killing a partition. I'll make an exception) I tried to install with a DVD-image, on hda7, on my harddrive and one boot-cd. This used to be my partition table (what I can remember from it): /dev/hda1 1 1216 9767488+ 83 Linux /dev/hda2 1217 7296 48837600 5 Extended /dev/hda5 1218 ? ? 83 Linux /dev/hda6 ? 2432 ? 83 Linux /dev/hda7 2433 7173 38082051 83 Linux /dev/hda8 7174 7296 987966 82 Linux swap / Solaris Here is what happened: I manually edited the partition table. Deleted hda5 and hda6. Created one partition where hda5 and hda6 used to be. The partition table now looked like this (still what I can remember from it): /dev/hda1 1 1216 9767488+ 83 Linux /dev/hda2 1217 7296 48837600 5 Extended /dev/hda5 2433 7173 38082051 83 Linux /dev/hda6 7174 7296 987966 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/hda7 1218 2432 ? 83 Linux As you can see my partitions have got new device names. I have told the installation program to use hda7 as / and use hda6 as swap. I selected programs to install and went on to format my new partition; hda7. That was NOT a good idea! For some reason the kernel was still using the old partition table.(I belive) Trying to format the very same partition where I had stored the installation image. It failed misserably, but not without breaking the partition and thus I lost everything I had stored on it.
