The only other differences that might affect I/O are that the readahead and
max_sectors values are set lower for the desktop kernel due to the higher
numbers' affect on latency.
You can adjust the readahead values per-device by setting:
/sys/block/<device>/queue/read_ahead_kb
It defaults to 512 with the default kernel and 128 on the desktop kernel.
You can adjust max_sectors by setting:
/sys/block/<device>/queue/max_sectors_kb
It defaults to 2048 on the default kernel and 1024 on the desktop kernel, but
on my test systems they're the same since they both get adjusted down to 1024,
which corresponds to SCSI_DEFAULT_MAX_SECTORS.
