Dear Nick,
The chromium package is following the upstream changes with regards to the
password stores. With the initial creation of the specific desktop files, I
tried to put the user in charge regarding choosing the password back-end.
Unfortunately (as also stated in the description), switching back-ends has the
side effect, that the previous stored passwords are inaccessible and no longer
restored even if the user switches back to the old back-end.
An alternative to this is the usage of the standard Chromium synchronization
mechanism of bookmarks, passwords, settings, etc. This would allow you to
synchronize between several machines, but also it would allow the switch of
password back-ends without the loss of passwords.
Upstream however has decided to remove the option to choose which password
back-end to use and now Chromium will decide on its own which back-end to use.
This could cause another "deletion" of passwords, but as indicated above the
best protection would be to switch on the synchronization.
Raymond
