UPDATE:
Opensuse 11.1 and opensuse 11.0 with all latest updates and it works fine.
On 11.0 using kde3, phone gets unmounted and displays safe removal message just
fine.
On 11.1 with kde4, after unmounting and then manually ejecting (kde4 doesn't do
that any more, but it is separate issue) phone also displays a safe removal
message just like it is supposed to.
Just sometimes it freezes on mount, but that is something else and it happens
rarely.
It works when using default stock kernels and even any other (e.g.
zen-sources), so the fix must be probably somewhere else.
Thank you for your assistance.
I'm not sure how to close this bug properly (what status) since I don't know
where the fix came from, so I'll leave it to you.
