This has been a continuing and annoying bug for me also for 11.3 openSuSE since
around M4 or so. I have always associated it with running KDE's KMail/KDEPIM
as I only really notice it when KMail goes out and does a scan for new mail.
My system scans a half dozen or so mail servers for various mail lists and mail
accounts and during the scans, IF messages are retrieved, it passes the
messages through bogofilter and spamassassin and when that happens, the system
virtually shuts down, exactly as this bug complains about. I too have an ASUS
mbd, 4G ram, 4ghz cpu dual core, almost 2 TB of disk space in a couple of raid
5 arrays. Thus, it took a while to eliminate things as to cause and effect.
I changed kernels several times, upgraded KDE versions (currently on KDE
v4.5.1), kernel 2.6.36.rc4 (I think I left it at last boot but I have tried
several from KOTD), have run numerous disk analysis tools both on the raid and
on the file systems to verify integrity, etc, and finally started looking in
sysconfig to see if there might be something in there. I finally found
HARDLOCKLIMIT which had a setting of @256 on my system. I increased it to
@1024 and voila, the pauses essentially have totally disappeared.
This setting sets the maximum number of hard locks a job can set total and if
it tries to go above this, it can't and has to stop and wait. By increasing
this limit, it no longer has to wait on other jobs that are running on a busy
system (and KDE is a VERY BUSY desktop environment, especially when running
Kontact/Kmail/Calander/browser/<whatever-else>/<activities> and I took a chance
that that hardlock limit might be a little low and hitting the limit every few
seconds (say when network/mail polling got active, etc., and while maybe it
shouldn't be trying to set that many locks, this appears to be a functional
workaround until the reason for so many locks being set and unset can be found.
Just in case it is useful information to others suffering this bug.
