Can you please attach /var/log/boot.msg? Both your controller and disk are
reporting a lot of transmission errors (they can't hear each other very well)
and it looks like after one of those transmission errors the disk or the
controller went to la-la land and failed to respond to further commands. I
don't think the transmission problem can be caused by the upgrade to 11.3.
Do you still have 11.1 installation around? If so, can you please check
whether the kernel reports about the same errors while copying? If 11.1 shows
about the same transmission errors, it's quite possible that the probability of
those transmission errors developing into full hang is fairly low and you were
just unlucky the last time.
One way or the other, the transmission errors are the base problem. Please try
to re-seat/position/place cables, put the hard drives on different power
connectors and so on and see if the transmission errors go away.
