http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=970598 Bug ID: 970598 Summary: kwin_x11 frequently crashes at random Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.1 Hardware: 64bit OS: openSUSE 42.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org Assignee: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: grglsn765@gmail.com QA Contact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created attachment 668603 --> http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/attachment.cgi?id=668603&action=edit last 100 lines of dmesg when the latest crash happened
From time to time kwin_x11 crashes. It often happens when I open up the chrome browser, or konqueror, or both. It sometimes happens at other times. It does not always happen when I open those applications. This happens on my desktop and on my 2 different laptops.
Because this happens on all 3 computers with different drivers, I think this must be related to something other than the driver. However, for initial troubleshooting purposes, I will focus on my desktop, as I do not always have ready access to my laptop. When kwin crashes, all windows move to my current screen and the header bars disappear on all windows. The way to recover is as follows. I hit alt-f2, and type in konsole. This opens a konsole window (without the header bar), I do the following:
ps ax | grep kwin
This gives me the process numbers. I kill the kwin_x11 dead process with kill -9, and the drkonqi process which is initiated (but cannot be used because the gui window for it doesn't open), I kill drkonqi with kill and the process number. Then I can either restart kwin_x11 in that konsole window or by hitting alt-f2. That is always reproducible to recover without having to kill X. However, it is still very disruptive to my regular work and happens at least 3 times a day, on whichever computer I am using at the time. This last time, I restarted it in that konsole window so that I would be able to see if there is any feedback while it is running. I am attaching 3 files - my Xorg.0.log, a portion of dmesg, and the konsole output that was given when kwin_x11 was run in that konsole window at the last time of the crash.
