The graph seems to show a fairly steady cpu usage which keeps migrating around
the 4 CPUs. So it is as though one CPU is always very busy, but which
particular CPU it is keeps changing.
When the over-all utilisation jumps to 50% there are probably 2 processes that
are each using 100% of a single CPU. Maybe it then goes to 3 or even 4
processes at 100% and everything locks up.
A bug and fix has recently come to my attention that sounds like it could be
the same as yours.
It was fixed in out source tree for 11.4 about a month ago but there hasn't
been an official release since.
Could you try the latest kernel-of-the-day and see if that helps?
i.e. in
http://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/kernel/kotd/openSUSE-11.4/x86_64/
possibly:

Thanks.
