It reuses the same kernel though. Previously it was possible to call mkinitrd e.g. like this: "env" "rootfstype=ext4" "mkinitrd" "-d" "/dev/null" "-m" "ext3 ext4 btrfs reiserfs binfmt_misc virtio_pci virtio_blk" "-k" "/boot/vmlinuz" "-i" "/boot/initrd-3.4.11-2.16-desktop-virtio" Ie specify root fs type and set some dummy root device via -d. In 12.2 this no longer works.
