The HDMI sound might be due to the video driver. HDMI needs the support of
audio in the video driver side, too. AFAIK, HDMI works with fglrx in the case
of ATI, at least.
For SPDIF out, I don't see any obvious problem. Could you try the following
for testing?
aplay -vv -Dplughw:0,1 your-wave-file.wav
If you are using PulseAudio, run with pasuspender
pasuspender -- aplay -vv -Dplughw:0,1 your-wave-file.wav
