The problem still persists. After a recent collection of patches,
a similar problem is now affecting Thunderbird. I have these Thunderbird
packages installed:
MozillaThunderbird-52.2.1-41.12.1.x86_64
MozillaThunderbird-translations-common-52.2.1-41.12.1.x86_64
MozillaThunderbird-translations-other-52.2.1-41.12.1.x86_64
Have these Firefox packages installed:
MozillaFirefox-52.2-57.12.2.x86_64
MozillaFirefox-branding-openSUSE-45-9.1.x86_64
I'm expecting there might be some race condition or other esoteric
start-up problem. It appears to be a issue of visualization. After either
program is started, if the control icons are visible, then they continue to be
visible throughout that run of the program. If instead, check boxes, radio
boxes, scroll bars, etc. are not visible just after start-up, then they are not
visible for that entire run.
The machine passes the built-in diagnostics as well as plenty of externally
obtained hardware diagnostics, so it would appear not to be a hardware
issue.
It appears that both programs are started by shell scripts which set their
own custom LD_LIBRARY_PATH to first use a set of dynamic libraries which
they keep in their own directories.
