For the record, with that information, I got it working.
I downloaded the "alien" map from
http://flatplanet.sourceforge.net/maps/alien.html. The archive
maps_alien-1.0.tar.gz contains, amongst other "objects", the file "moon.jpg",
which I copied to /usr/share/xplanet/images.
To reproduce the situation, you can use the command:
xplanet -date 20090407.101500 -verbosity 2 \
-window -longitude 0.99167 -range 100000 \
-radius 30 -label -geometry 1024x768
when the moon.jpg is not present, it displays with a warning:
Warning: Can't find map file moon.jpg
In createMap.cpp at line 75
Warning: Can't load map file moon.jpg
In createMap.cpp at line 86
and when the moon.jpg file is copied, it displays the Moon in the window.
However, there is something very weird, the Moon moves very fast in a question
of minutes (on 20090407.101000, ie five minutes earlier, the Moon is at the
other side of the Earth...).
Yes, certainly adding a supplementary package would be nice, which would need
no maintenance ;-)
Why do you say "wontfix"? It could be "fix later", the fix is possible and
easy.
