After contacting HP about this they made a few recommendations about this and
other problems.
One of these was to update the BIOS, which I did.
The update itself only relates to Microsoft Vista - I knew there was a reason
for keeping it installed.

This updates the BIOS to the "September 30, 2008" release - other details can
be found in ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp41001-41500/sp41279.cva
After three hibernate cycles the network reconnects just fine :)
Only one minor quibble - sustained downloads reach on average only about 70% of
the wired bandwidth - could this be due to the realtime encryption bottleneck
of the wireless router?
