OK, somewhere between then and now things are sorted.
As requested I tried switching back to nouveau and booting with nomodeset (once
I found out how) and the boot worked OK. I ran the modprobe commands as
suggested and the system stayed up and reset the graphics mode. I then tried a
straight reboot (without nomodeset) and the system is up and running. FYI I
have run Install Updates from KDE/Plasma since logging this bug so maybe there
was a fix already in the pipeline :)
The nvidia proprietary drivers generate a graphics reset at random intervals so
I'm using nouveau at the moment
