It was not by moving the pointer via touchpad (which is tracked by synaptics on this laptop), but by an external USB mouse. Nevertheless, somewhen in the last 1 1/2 years this issue was nuked (AFAIR when 13.2 came out), so I'm closing this as FIXED.
