I really don't know what the target device should the bootloader be installed
to in your server while raid mode enabled. It's obviously not /dev/sda in your
case. I had a firmware raid 1 (Adaptec AIC-9405W SAS) server booted fine with
openSUSE 13.1 out of box (YaST did a good job here ..)
It's managed by dmraid(!mdadm) and linux device mapper driver with DDF external
metadat format. The hexdump -C /dev/sda and hexdump -C /dev/dm-0 reveals same
mbr information. The install device is /dev/disk/by-id/raid-ddf1_MIXEDLAB in
/etc/default/grub_installdevice which's a symlink to /dev/dm-0.
Probably we should use device mapper device or md device in this case for
installation. But maybe we should first know what's managing your raid
configuration.. (mdadm or dmraid ).
$ dmraid -r
$ mdadm --detail --scan
