I googled around some more, and while I didn't find a solution, I did find some
ways to extract additional information about the system, which may be useful to
you.
Output of "ps aux | grep acpi":
root 12 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? S< 06:32 0:00 [kacpid]
root 13 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? S< 06:32 0:00 [kacpi_notify]
root 1731 0.0 0.0 1660 564 ? Ss 06:32 0:00 /sbin/acpid
104 1969 0.0 0.1 2204 948 ? S 06:32 0:00
hald-addon-acpi: listening on acpid socket /var/run/acpid.socket
root 2463 0.0 0.1 4600 1668 ? S 06:32 0:00
/usr/sbin/powersaved -d -f /var/run/acpid.socket -v 3
root 3455 0.0 0.0 2116 668 pts/1 R+ 07:51 0:00 grep acpi
Output of "powersave -B" (battery is fully charged, despite kpowersave's claim
it's at 0%, and AC plugged in):
All primary batteries:
Remaining percent: 0
Charging state:
AC state: online
Battery 1:
Type: primary
Remaining percent: 0
Charging state: neither charging nor discharging
Output of "lshal | grep battery":
udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer_power_supply_battery_BAT1'
battery.charge_level.current = 0 (0x0) (int)
battery.charge_level.design = 1369592 (0x14e5f8) (int)
battery.charge_level.last_full = 1369592 (0x14e5f8) (int)
battery.charge_level.percentage = 0 (0x0) (int)
battery.charge_level.rate = 0 (0x0) (int)
battery.is_rechargeable = true (bool)
battery.model = 'MS-1058' (string)

info.capabilities = {'battery'} (string list)
info.category = 'battery' (string)
info.udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer_power_supply_battery_BAT1'

And finally the output of "grep . /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/*" (I tried all the
different configurations of AC plugged in and recognized, AC plugged in but not
recognised, AC plugged out, as both recognized & unrecognized. The result was
always identical):
/proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/alarm:alarm: unsupported

/proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state:present rate: unknown
/proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state:remaining capacity: unknown

Hope this helps.
