Hi, thanks for your time.

The only[1] difference between a working (freshly installed or dup'ed) and a
buggy machine are these files:
---------- 8< ----------
md5sum new/*
60e9b462835de1a459bff9648fde527b new/common-session
60e9b462835de1a459bff9648fde527b new/common-session-pc
c7d8be55839e4f901019a356d79bae25 new/login
md5sum err/*
0d94d6a9cbaf336e5b5091df6f21031a err/common-session
0d94d6a9cbaf336e5b5091df6f21031a err/common-session-pc
1ab3452908da4c827470d5ee32dd1b1b err/login
---------- >8 ----------
As indicated in comment 12, I don't think these are relevant:
The first diff is the change i had to do to make the "killed" problem disappear
(if I reenable it, the bug reappears):
---------- 8< ----------
diff err/common-session new/common-session
16c16
< #session optional pam_systemd.so
session optional pam_systemd.so
---------- >8 ----------
The second diff is whitespace and a comment. (The whitespace on the end of line
is on the non-buggy machine.)
---------- 8< ----------
diff err/login new/login | cat -A
7c7$
< session required^Ipam_loginuid.so$
---$
session required^Ipam_loginuid.so^I$
9d8$
< #session optional^Ipam_lastlog.so^Inowtmp showfailed$
---------- >8 ----------
The package lists are quite different (see attachment) but I still have no clue
what could cause this problem.
[0]: I have used "grep pam" here because all the other changes aren't important
because they're either in nonrelevant packages like pure-ftpd or they are
changed in the same way on both machines (like /etc/securetty has an additional
entry).
[1]: I have omitted from this list those files that are only on the buggy
machine, because I do not think they are related to the problem: ppp,
pure-ftpd.
