Ok, tested successfully on my big machine a few minutes ago:
openSUSE 11.1 + vanilla-kernel-2.6.31.4 + self-compiled firmware from git-repo.
I created a /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-wlan1 manually and could successfully
establish a fast and (for the 10 minutes I tested) stable connection using
ifup.
So driver+firmware are working !
Concerning 11.2:
I updated my M8-test-machine with todays packages to kernel 2.6.31.3 and
installed the firmware-package. Just noticed:
Additional rpm output:
Reloading module ar9170
FATAL: Module ar9170 not found.
FATAL: Module ar9170 not found.
=> The module is called ar9170usb.
After the reboot, dmesg tells me:
[ 198.575684] usb 1-8: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
[ 198.727701] usb 1-8: New USB device found, idVendor=057c, idProduct=8401

=> The firmware-file is found but not loaded successfully.
Should look like this:
..
usb 2-8: firmware: requesting ar9170.fw
ath: EEPROM regdomain: 0x8114
ath: EEPROM indicates we should expect a country code
ath: doing EEPROM country->regdmn map search
ath: country maps to regdmn code: 0x37
ath: Country alpha2 being used: DE
ath: Regpair used: 0x37
phy1: Selected rate control algorithm 'minstrel'
cfg80211: Calling CRDA for country: DE
Registered led device: ar9170-phy1::tx
Registered led device: ar9170-phy1::assoc
usb 2-8: Atheros AR9170 is registered as 'phy1'
usbcore: registered new interface driver ar9170usb
Vladimir, where did you get the ar9170.fw-file from ? Self-compiled from
git-repo ?
I just noticed that its size is ~7.1kb while mine (on 11.1) is ~14.3kb...
