The issue seems to be with the file
/home/<user>/.kde/share/config/knetworkmanagerrc. It has the 64-char hex string
in the definition of section:
[ConnectionSecrets_<16-char ASCII string>_802-11-wireless-security]
Type=802-11-wireless-security
Value_psk=<string><64-char hex string></string>\n
It is the same 64-char hex string that appears when accessing the
'KNetworkManager tray icon-> Edit Connections-> FarNet-> Edit Connection' set
of dialogs.
Changing this entry to:
[ConnectionSecrets_<16-char ASCII string>_802-11-wireless-security]
Type=802-11-wireless-security
Value_psk=<string></string>\n
allowed the wlan0 connection to be made. However, despite changing
knetworkmanagerrc content, the same 64-bit char hex string appears in any
subsequent connection attempt in the dialogs accessed through 'KNetworkManager
tray icon-> Edit Connections-> FarNet-> Edit Connection'. If something is
supposed to change that to the raw 20-char ASCII passphrase input by the user,
and pass it along to wpa_supplicant, then it's not happening.
