Perhaps a local running cupsd with "BrowsePoll" works better than the "client-only" configuration?
Yes, I'd like to try that out as well, thanks a lot for the suggestion. Especially as I'll have access to different printers at different locations. Also your tip about CUPS_SERVER is interesting. As soon as time permits :-] Still, openoffice shouldn't freeze, and I don't know yet whether it'll recover some day (I guess it would, but this is not reasonably usable in its current form). I will test that now.
