Well, hpijs may be the old driver, but I'd assume that it's still used in a lot
of configurations. It's being used on my system here, and I'm certain that
hpijs was chosen as default driver. I created the setup with hplip on
tumbleweed with the "hp-setup" tool, about a year ago I guess.
Indeed with current packages (hplip 3.18.6,cups-2.3b4-3.2) the hpcups driver is
chosen by default, but I'm certain it was different at that time.
If we simply take away hpijs, lots of printers out there will stop working.
Thus I don't think it's a good idea in the short term. Clearly marking the
driver as deprecated and spitting out related warnings might work.
Also, I'd like to remark that hpijs and hpcups offer different driver options,
where those of hpijs ("printout mode") feel more comfortable to me, personally.
Maybe just because I've been used to them for many years. The choice of paper
formats is also saner (read: shorter) with hpijs.
