I now suspect that the "DRBD" packages are not drbd itself, but the "Tools
package" (If true, is a source of confusion)
Looking at my systems, I now surmise that the kernel has basic kernel level
drbd drivers already included but by default not a documented way to configure
and manage.
I've also found the official SUSE DRBD documentation but unfortunately there is
no date so there is no quick way to determine if the doc is relevant to 8.3.x
(I think likely) or 8.4.x (which I really need).
Also, in passing I would like to note that without working drbd 8.4.x packages,
there is obviously no way to invoke "drbd -h" and there are no MAN pages. I
also do not see any doc files in a base openSUSE install, only some comments
embedded in the Kdrbd.conf file I describe below.
Early skim of the SUSE DRBD documentation lists several drbd apps which are not
available on openSUSE.
I now suspect that drbd source compilation as I originally requested is not
likely necessary but am currently trying to determine exactly what is not
provided (probably higher level apps, ie "tools" as the error says).
If the DRBD package in the OSS and Factory really are the "DRBD Tools" that is
likely the problem since the package installs 8.3.11 while the kernel is
providing drbd version 8.4.x
I'm also mystified a bit at the moment that normally the config file is
/etc/drbd.conf (which is empty and only created by installing the drbd package)
but on my default openSUSE <without the drbd package installed> I see a config
file at the following location
/usr/src/linux-3.11.10-11/drivers/block//drbd/Kconfig
Further research is needed on what can be configured using this undocumented
config file, maybe it will turn out to be one of many possible differences
between 8.3.x vs 8.4.x.
