If smart is also used to install software on the main system, there are channel definitions in /etc/smart/channels. If kiwi is started, the channel definitions are deleted and the image creating process stops at setting up smart due to questions like (not shown to the user): Removing channel 'Pakete aus dem Multimediabereich (openSUSE 10.2) (Packman)' was suggested. Do you want to remove it?
