if you have a look into /usr/sbin/sax.sh you will find code like
the following:
function needHardwareUpdate() {
...
for i in `/usr/sbin/isax -l Card | grep Driver | cut -f3 -d:`;do
echo "SaX: Checking update status for $i driver"
case $i in
nvidia)
if [ "$MD/${i}_drv.so" -nt $CF ];then
echo "SaX: NVidia driver is newer than config -> calling
reinit"
return 1
fi
as you can see we take care for the update from xorg (nv) to NVIDIA (nvidia)
driver. But the drivers timestamp must be newer than the xorg.conf timestamp.
The process will fail if:
1) the user manually edits xorg.conf after driver update, not a bug
2) While installing the nvidia driver some process touches the xorg.conf
This would be bad
