The control socket is created in the directory /var/run/pdns instead of under /var/lib/pdns, which is the chroot-dir. As a result, the rec_control program does not work:

Fatal: Unable to receive message over control channel: Connection timed out After installing pdns-recursor-3.1.7-8.3.x86_64, I could fix the problem as follows. Log in as root and issue the following commands: Stop the pdns-recursor: /etc/init.d/pdns-recursor stop mkdir -p /var/lib/pdns/var/run/pdns cd /var/run rm -rf pdns/ ln -s ../lib/pdns/var/run/pdns pdns Restart the pdns-recursor: /etc/init.d/pdns-recursor start The rec_control program now works properly: pong Please, fix the installation procedure.
