If you use Reiserfs (as used to be the default) or ext2, then all is well. If you want a journaling fs just use Reiser (It has served me well for years). If you insist on ext3, create a small RAID md, say 80MB, format with ext2 and mount it as /boot. Since little ever changes on /boot, journaling doesn't buy you anything there.
