so after the last set of experiments, I realized I did not look at dmesg for a
while.
There is a ACPI warning pasted below. Interestingly, it is just below to where
the system would normally hang!
Googling for the ACPI warning, there are some recent reports around it, at
least the first two reporting hang or lockup of X:
