Thanks for the bug report.
The mount command has been backgrounded to avoid the waiting time during boot
due to unreachable servers or server that is rebooting etc. Also mount
operation should be retried with a timeout and should not be given up at the
first attempt. So it cannot be foregrounded and it will be unpleasant to most
of the users.
The current redirection "mount -at cifs > /dev/null &" will output most of the
expected errors like mount pointing not existing and the rest are being logged
in /var/log/messages. I think the only case where it cannot throw error is when
server is not unreachable (and it is expected).
I believe this is the correct and welcome behavior for most of the users and we
cannot make the suggested change in the init script. You are welcome to change
your init script in case if it suits your need.
