Hmmm... So, hdparm -y and the current shutdown sequence sound the same? That
means there's nothing wrong with the current code. It just could be that the
drive's normal (non-emergency) unloads sounds funny while emergency unload
sounds more like regular spindown.
Please do the following and report the result.
1. smartctl -a /dev/sdX
2. hdparm -y /dev/sdX
3. smartctl -a /dev/sdX
==
1. smartctl -a /dev/sdX
2. shutdown and boot again
3. smartctl -a /dev/sdX
==
on a patched kernel (start_stop removed)
1. smartctl -a /dev/sdX
2. shutdown and boot again
3. smartctl -a /dev/sdX
