Just my opinion, but I think a new user account should be added to the cdrom
group (or I suppose changing the default permissions would work too). The
average person is going to be frustrated their cdrom drive does not work after
a new install just as it does on Windows. Why should a new user have to
research how to add themselves to a group, and which group to use, in order to
rip some music onto their computer? The extra configuration would hurt Linux
adoption because people are used to things working right out of the box. I
understand for security, the principle of starting with the least number of
privileges allowable and only adding what is needed, but this really is
something that is needed in the desktop computing environment.
