thanks for the feedback.
i have some further info - i apologise it's not more detailed, but perhaps it
will help.
i tried to reinstall suse 10.3, to see if i could fix this. to do that i had
to juggle with my raid system - i removed a disc from the array and used that
to store a backup while i re-installed on the smaller remaining array, then
added the disk back (my original partitioning was poorly chosen; this let me
re-partition).
i explain that in some detail because:
- i hope it explains why i didn't want to reinstall earlier
- hal appeared to work correctly on the new install (3 disk array)
- hal stopped when i added the fourth disk back into the array!
unfortunately i messed up somewhere (the above is simplified as there are
several raid arrays) and ended up having to reinstall yet again, this time on a
4 disk array, and for that install hal has always failed.
this seems to suggest that the problem occurs when i am using more than 3 disks
in a raid array.
to be honest i find that very unlikely - it could just be random changes that
look odd, or i may have missed some other important change (in my defense it's
been a bit of a nightmare trying to juggle disks and get everything working
again without losing data). and given the problems i had i really do not want
to shrink the array again to check. anyway, thought i should mention that in
case it helps.
