I also have strange USB problems with openSUSE 11.0 (x86_64). A wireless
keyboard/mouse combo is connected to the computer using a USB receiver, seated
in an externally-powered hub. This works fine most of the time, But twice,
after starting up, the input devices were not recognized, The first time this
happened, it was after I logged in (so I could log in, but then couldn't
continue). The second time, I couldn't even log in, as both input devices were
without function. In both cases, after unplugging and replugging the hub a
couple of times, the devices finally became functioning again. Don't know
whether that was due to the disconnecting and reconnecting, perhaps it was also
related to the time taken.
The same thing happens when I connect an external USB drive to the system (not
to the hub). The drive shows up on the desktop, then mouse and keyboard quickly
become flaky and stop functioning. After removing and reinserting the hub for a
while, keyboard and mouse are restored. The drive is a 3.5" SATA disk in a USB
2 case, but from the reading speed, it then seems to operate at USB 1.1 speed.
Also, essentially the same hardware was used for about 7 months to run
OpenSolaris before I installed openSUSE a couple days ago. I didn't notice USB
problems then.
